Touring Hong Kong

After Disneyland, Daddy Kong & I took the train to a downtown area and rode a trolley to an area called Victoria’s Peak. From the top of this peak, you have a great view of the city. We saw it at sunset, and again the next morning as part of our group tour.

We also have seen several market areas. We toured a jewelry shop, and a temple, as well. As part of our tour we had an “authentic” dim sum lunch. It was truly delicious, lots of steamed and fried dumplings, and spring rolls, rice, fried noodles, and broccoli. We also rode a traditional boat ride through a harbor. It was fascinating to see such a blending of the East & West, and wealth/non-wealth as we saw mega yachts side by side with traditional old fishing boats and houseboats.

We have had fun taking pictures and noticing interesting “English” phrases on some of the signs. Our favorites are “Mind the gap” which we believe means watch your step. I also enjoyed “Maintain coughing manners.” Our most favorite have been spit related. We have seen signs stating, “wrap your spittle” and “No hawking”.

During our “self-guided” tour of the market area yesterday afternoon, it felt like we were in a scene from an Amazing Race episode. We were in a very crowded area on a Saturday afternoon, and the volumes of people moving around were just fascinating. The pedestrian crosswalks at the intersection we watched were at least 40 feet wide. People crossed the street in long rows 40 feet across and 20 people deep, and both masses headed straight towards each other when given the okay to cross. It was fascinating.

From a food standpoint, we haven’t done very much that is exciting. We landed on Thursday night. Friday morning we ate oatmeal in the room (in an effort to eat down the weight of our luggage.) We had lunch at Disneyland, and attempted to eat sushi there, but the sushi bay of the restaurant was closed, and dinner was room service pizza. All of our breakfasts will be hotel buffet breakfasts from here on out, and we’ll discuss that further later. Yesterday lunch was the dim sum lunch, and dinner was skipped b/c our lunch was late, and we went to bed early. We continue to take drinks with ice in Hong Kong, mostly because we keep forgetting. Mainland China will be different. Trying to remember to be more careful with tooth brushing and ice but it’s hard because we have been so tired.
